Hooksmaniac 2012 - Kuala Berang



Batu Bersurat Terengganu which is estimated to have about 700 years old is engraved with inscriptions of the oldest and Jawi writing first found in Malaysia. It proves Islam has arrived in before 1326 or 1386. This stone was found half submerged after flood receded on the banks of the River Tersat in Kuala Berang, Hulu Terengganu in 1899. The stone is said to have been discovered by Saiyed Husin bin Ghulam Al Bukhari that a businessman. Saiyed Husin Ali and asked village Headman lifted and placed on rafts to be brought to Kuala Terengganu. Reached Kuala Terengganu, this stone was presented His Majesty Sultan Zainal Abidin III and then the stone placed on Bukit Puteri.

In 1922 Deputy British Adviser in Rajasthan Mr. HS Peterson asked a photographer who was Japanese, N.Suzuki taking pictures and shipped to CO Blegden to be reading. The stone has been broken part next to it and written in Malay with Jawi script dated 702 AH.

In 1923, this stone was seconded to the Singapore Museum to the National Museum in Kuala Lumpur built, stone tablets were returned to Kuala Lumpur from Singapore Raffles Museum.
On February 12, 1987, the State Government has written to the Department of Museum expressed a desire to get back the Inscribed Stone for exhibition in the State Museum. In 1991, the Cabinet has decided that the Inscribed Stone returned to the State Government
